Do houseplants have an effect on your mental health?

We commonly hear of the positive impacts of surrounding oneself with houseplants. The presence of indoor plants tends to evoke a sense of well-being and contentment in people. There's a wealth of scientific research that delves deeper into how plants can influence our mental state. Here we will dive into a study assessing the neurology behind our brains and houseplants!

Focus and Memory

One fascinating aspect of this research* involves the observation of changes in theta brain waves among individuals who interact with or are in proximity to greenery. Theta waves are intriguing because while they are associated with creativity and spirituality, an excess of these brainwaves can sometimes hinder one's ability to focus on everyday tasks, particularly work-related responsibilities. For instance, this study involving elementary students revealed a significant decrease in theta brain waves when they were exposed to real plants, as opposed to subjects near virtual plants or no plants at all. This decrease indicated an enhanced ability to concentrate on school-related tasks in the presence of greenery. This suggests that all our senses, not only visual perception, play a pivotal role in shaping an individual's sense of mental well-being.

Rest and Relaxation

Mean while a study conducted by Hassan et al. explored beta waves, along with measurements such as alpha waves-the brain waves associated with rest and relaxation, blood pressure, anxiety, and meditation levels. This study demonstrated an increase in alpha waves and meditation levels while decreases in blood pressure and anxiety. Conclusions show when completing tasks involving plants, individuals enter into a more relaxed state, within just one minute. That being said, if you are finding yourself feeling off-center or stressed, simply stepping away for just one minute to water a plant or trim off a dead leaf could transform those negative emotions to an overall sense of positive well-being.

Purpose and Routine

Drawing from my own knowledge, it's worth noting that houseplants can have various psychological benefits beyond the ones covered in this research. They can provide a sense of accomplishment and responsibility when cared for, fostering a positive impact on self-esteem and a sense of purpose. Additionally, the aesthetic appeal of houseplants can create visually pleasing and calming environments, contributing to stress reduction and overall mental well-being.

The Overall Conclusion is: Yes, plants have been shown to have a positve impact on your brain and your sense of mental well-being.

In conclusion, incorporating houseplants into your living space can offer numerous mental health benefits, including improved mood, enhanced focus, and a greater sense of relaxation. The research suggest that these green companions can positively influence your mental state and contribute to a healthier and more contented life. So, when you consider adding another plant to your home, remember that it's not just about décor; it's about nurturing your mental health and well-being. Embrace the greenery, and you may find yourself reaping the psychological rewards.
